The Bookworm Club. {Join Us}

So many times on here, I've talked about my love of reading....especially my love for children reading.
Although the digital world is such a huge & vital part of our day-to-day lives, the tradition & value of a real paper book is something I treasure and want to continue to share with my children.
I read to my kids often. The process of sharing a story, and experiencing that world together is very special to me. Yet, not only is reading-time, a fun & imaginative escape. It is also a vitally huge part of our children's learning, development & ability to make connections. From reading, our children are not only gaining & expanding their literacy & literary knowledge but they are utilising thinking skills, questioning skills and gaining a broader understanding of themselves & their world.
As a primary educator, I find it quite natural to share the world of books with little ones. I also enjoy extending a good book into some real-life, hands-on activities; that also engage, educate & bring enjoyment to children.
So....this is why THE BOOKWORM CLUB for Kids was born.
We all know about the concept of 'book clubs' for adults. I want to take this concept & create an online {virtual} community here that caters for the inquisitive & imaginative minds of our kids, through the sharing of books! Here at Scissors Paper Rock, I will soon be hosting a KIDS BOOK CLUB. And I would LOVE for YOU to participate.
Feel free to share & use this button:
How?
There will be no right or wrong way to play along. And I don't want to 'make' too many rules :) Because at the end of the day....this is about sharing the joy of reading with kids, experiencing the literary world together and reflecting on it. Each month, I will post a 'theme prompt' as well as a list of suggested books to coincide with that theme. During that month, you can read however many books to match that theme with your children, and then tell us about your experiences. I will aim to do 2 books per month, with some follow-up activities & I will blog about it. I don't want this to be 'another job' on your already massive to-do list or a burden. It should be a chance for you to spend some quality time with your little ones. If you are a blogger, please share your reading experience each month on your blog {I will also create some linky's so others can see your posts}. It can be as simple as a photo, a book review or a series of follow-up activities you did. If you're not a blogger, please still play along - share your experience on facebook or twitter or instagram. Use the hashtag #SPRbookworms to share your pictures or links. And if you're a teacher, nanny, child-care worker or librarian....please join in too. This isn't just for Mummas & Dadda's. Get inspired! Get involved. Share the world of books with the little ones in your life!
Here's a few ideas on how you could build on a book's storyline or theme:
- review the book
- take photos of your child experiencing the book
- make predictions about the story from doing a 'picture walk' first
- use questioning before, during & after the reading of the book
- discuss the characters, the setting, the storyline
- make connections with your child about them.....with factors from the book
- After reading:
- draw the characters
- do a craft activity {eg: using recycled materials, make a character or animal from the story}
- write a different ending for the story
- create a new character
- write a letter to the main characters
- find a recipe that relates to the story, and do some cooking together
- go on a hunt {eg: bug hunt, word hunt, nature hunt,}
- go to the library to find similar books/themes
- search the computer for images, information, etc that relate to the story
- make a map
- do a collage
- build & construct
- BE CREATIVE.
- ONE BOOK CAN CREATE HOURS OF FUN!
This bookclub is open to children of all ages. The same book that a 2 years enjoys can also be loved by a 12 year old. The themes will be broad so a range of book styles can be enjoyed. And the extent of follow-up activities can be modified depending on the child's age.
When?
I will give the first theme prompt {for JULY} later this week, and I will aim to have an example of the book/s I used, and how we experienced them! I will then create a linky tool for anyone who is keen to join in.
I hope to see you joining in too! I will be choosing some photos &/or links that have been tagged with #SPRbookworms to showcase on my blog as well.
I have also started creating some free printables to go with this book club - a book mark, a reading log, some book plates etc. These will be on my blog for free download soon.
Will you be joining the BOOKWORM CLUB in July? I hope to see you here.
