July Bookworms Part 1 - Bugs & Insects.

Hello Fellow Bookwormers :)
How are you going with your BUG & INSECT reading experiences?
As promised, I have created a mid-month link-up so you can share any experiences you've had recently with your kids. I will also do another link-up at the end of the month....you can enter both, or just one :) I can't wait to get around to visit your blogs/sites/photos to see what 'buggy' fun you've had at your house.
To kick off the BUG & INSECT theme, we took a trip to the local library to source some relevant books.
We chose a varied selection of fiction & non-fiction. We also re-read some of our old favourites, such as Eric Carle's: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
A great information book we found & loved this month, was THE WORLD OF INSECTS {a World Book by Learning Ladders}.

And to kick off some follow-up fun, we went on a BUG HUNT :)
I hid our collection of plastic toy bugs {$1 a packet from BIG W} around our garden. Ella then went searching with her butterfly net :) She then enjoyed sorting them, counting them & then hiding them for me to find. We also then looked back through the book to see if there were any insects that were the same as our plastic ones.

Later that evening, Ella played a prank on me with a rubber spider. From there we started playing with the insects in the dark, and then came up with this fun idea....... INSECT SHADOWS. We used a torch & a clear wall space with all the lights turned off.
Creepy but fun :)

Over the next few days, we re-read the information book about Insects, and learnt more each time. I like the book because it is aimed at children, therefore the pictures are large & attractive. The text is also large and fairly simplistic. It is full of fun facts, relevant information and great diagrams. Ella said she liked the Butterfly page the most, because she liked the picture showing the Life Cycle.
So, we did a little art n craft session the next day. We made a caterpillar.

Ella named her ZeeZee :)
We used an egg carton, scissors, paint, googly eyes and a straw. I cut the egg carton out {as it's quite hard for little hands} and pierced the holes for his antennae, but Ella did the rest on her own.
We found the idea in a Fairy Craft Book, which Ella has had for some time now. {Fairy Things to make & Do by Usborne Activities - EDSCO}

Due to a rainy week this past week, we weren't able to get out much. However today the weather looks promising & the forecast for this week looks much better, so we're planning on going on a 'real bug hunt' and doing some 'buggy' cooking too :) I'll share these experiences with you at the end of the month. I also have some other library finds lined up to read. One on snails and the other on ladybugs :) So, I'm sure we'll find some crafty fun to do as a follow up with them too :)
On some of the rainy mornings, Ella enjoyed playing on ABC for Kids on my laptop. DirtGirlWorld has a few great activities & games for kids about bugs, gardening and nature. I recommend you play them with your kids. They're fab because they're kid-friendly {unlike some online games, which claim to be for kids} and they're educational. Ella at 4, can easily navigate the site on her own, so that's also a bonus.

So, there you have it! Our fortnight in the world of BUGS & INSECTS :) I really enjoyed sourcinsg & reading some new books, and the fun learning & discovery that the kids & I embarked on. I hope you had some simple fun with the theme too!
Please link up when you're ready, and share your experiences. Also, don't forget to tag your photos or links with #sprbookworms on Twitter or Instagram. I will showcase some great inspirational ideas on my blog at some stage too! PLUS.....I have a FAB book to GIVEAWAY to one lucky person who links up to this linky by this Friday 20th July 2012. I have a copy of 'From Caterpillar to Butterfly' By Deborah Heiligman, which I randomly draw on Friday night.
HAVE FUN!
