First Memories.

When we moved house earlier this year, we hired a removalist team to do the majority of the heavy lifting and transporting. They did a fab job! My Mum & I somehow got caught up chatting with one of the removalists. He was a 'colourful character' - in all senses of the word. A nice guy - a hard working guy. But we couldn't help but giggle at {or be taken back by} his comments.

Ryder was a mere 3 months old at the time. The removalist, let's call him John for the sake of giving him a name, asked me how old Ryder was. When I replied, he told me that he's probably now at an age where he's really seeing things and understanding things. I nodded and smiled in agreement.

John then went on, telling us that he could remember back to being a few months old and lying in the crib. He said he could remember the mobile above his cot and the colour of the wall near him. He continued on with stories of being a few months old and the memories he had of mastering stairs {crawling} and the connection he had with his dog. I threw in a few "Wow....you can really remember things from when you were a tiny baby? Thats' amazing!! I can only remember from about 4yrs old onwards"..... whilst looking over at Mum with a 'save me' expression.

Then John came out with this ripper..... "Yeah, well I can actually remember being born! I remember seeing the light and feeling the pressure around me, and opening my eyes to see my Mum!"

On that note, Mum and I changed the subject and politely moved on with the chores of packing the house.

I certainly don't have memories from my baby years and I definitely don't remember my own birth. Haaa. But it got me thinking - what are my first memories? How old was I when I started retaining events and storing the details in my own memory bank?

I think my first memories are from when I was about 4. Maybe late 3's. However, I think some memories are blurred or even created from stories my parents have told me, and the photos I have looked at many a time.

I do remember pre-school. I remember tea parties with my Grandma in our backyard. I remember our first house in Australia. I remember going to my brother's swim club to watch them compete. I remember the home daycare I went to whilst my parents worked. I remember my GrandDad giving me a blue slurpee one afternoon and me then vomiting it all over the toilet floor.

I wonder what first memories my kids will have?

And one of the reasons why I blog and journal so much of our life?! So all of our memories are here in one place for my kids to look back on for years to come. Their memories can be built and restored from this little online space :)

What are your earliest memories? How old were you? {Is your memory as good as John's?....hehehe!}

This made me laugh! My memory certainly isn't as good as John's! I have a bad memory (even from recent events) but certain music, food and smells always bring memories flooding back randomly :-)

Your tale of 'John' made me laugh - hilarious! My memories go back to around four I'd say. I can remember snippets of different things but my clear memories begin from pre-school onewards. Isn't it funny to think that our children may not remember much from these years that we as mothers consider so precious ;( But as you say, having our blogs as records will be great down the track. Enjoy your weekend lovely xx

I remember being 3 years old because that year I spent a lot of time in hospital and can clearly remember feeling sad and scared. I remember the hospital room was very large, filled with rows of small white metal beds. The nurses wore old fashioned uniforms and those big hats with the red + on them.

Back in those days parents were not allowed to stay overnight with their children in hospital (as they are nowdays) so I cried together with the other children in my ward every night when it was time for our parents to go home at the end of visiting hours.

On a happier note I also remember my hair was a much lighter colour back then and my skin was not yet soaked in the 10,000 freckles I have now. I remember some of the toys I used to play with and my favourite doll was named Connie. I remember starting at kindy and making new friends and getting my first pet cat for my 4th birthday.
